Frosted Votive Candle Holders

Votive candles are also called prayer candles, usually made of white or yellow beeswax, although nowadays, votive candles come in different colors.  In older times, votive candles were used during prayer as offering.  Today, its use has evolved over the years and is now used to help evoke a mood of relaxed atmosphere.  Votive candles are commonly seen in health spas, resorts, and intimate restaurants.    These can even be purchased from local stores for people who would want to de-stress at home, in their bathroom or their bedroom.

Votive candles melt all the way; hence, they usually come in containers to prevent the melted candle from spreading all over.   These containers are called votive candle holders and come in different shapes and sizes, and made either of glass, metal, ceramic or stone.  These candle holders are often tall to allow the candle to burn freely while protecting it from the wind.  Classic votive candle holders are made of a tall cylindrical glass with a closed bottom.    Nowadays, these candle holders come in different styles.

Frosted votive candle holders are commonly used as candle containers.  They are available at local stores and online.  However, making frosted votive candle holders is another great craft project that you can do.  It's simple, fun and it can save you money from buying them separately.  Frosting glass is as simple as etching the surface to make it opaque with a textured feel.  To start the project, you would need the following:

Frosted Votive Candle Holders
  • Armour Etch (available in most craft stores)
  • Glass Candle Holder
  • Protected work surface
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Masking tape or stickers
  • Paint Brush
  • Plastic-lined Paper Plate
  • Warm Water and Soap

To begin, decide on how you would want your glass to look like, make your own design.  If you want some spots to remain smooth, cover it with shaped masking tape cut-out or a fancy-shaped sticker.  When etching, work on protected surfaces and wear rubber gloves.  Pour the etching cream on the paper plate.  Using the paint brush, cover the entire glass surface with a thick layer of etching cream and let it sit for 15 minutes.  With your gloved hand, pick up the glass and rinse off all the cream from the glass and in the sink.  As a final step, remove the tape or stickers on the glass, and then wash it again with soap and warm water.  You have just made your first of many frosted votive candle holders.  Go ahead and make some more!
